Hi Jan! your question about a child learning to ride is abit like asking how long a piece a string is!There's no right or wrong age or even right or wrong breed of pony. The age of the child really depends on the childs peronality-if its a confident child in general,if its interested in learning to ride(this isn't as far fetched as it sounds-sometimes, parents want the child to learn because its what they wanted to d0!),and various other factors. My youngest son first sat on a pony at 18months old and now at age four is confident and happy on the lead rein. As regards to what type of pony, it needs to be chilled and laid back and relaxed about everything, breed not important but its stability is, although no pony will ever be perfect! If the child trusts the pony then it will be happy to ride it- actually, this applies at any age, even if you are an adult!!(SOMETIMES MORE SO!!)So basically, whatever age you are , if you want to ride, then go for it- whether child or adult. Hope this helps. All the best, carol. p.s. my little ponies are both welsh types, one 11.1hh and one 12.0hh. x

Hi lisa, sorry but cant seem to get through to your mobile!hope your well, here's some info about Truffle(she was unnamed when we got her,so we came up with a few ideas including choccy but the kids decided on truffle-well, it is to do with chocolate,i suppose!) I didnt really like her when i went to see her in her field the first time, but something kept calling me back and after the 6th visit i decided to loan her, and i can truthfully say i am SO PLEASED i did! she's great with the kids (youngest 4),good to box, farrier, traffic, everything. She has mild sweetitch which we are manging without to much effort, and although we struggled to get her going off the lead rein, she is starting to get the idea. She is a lovely really dark liver chestnut now that she has her summer coat through with a mahogany sheen which makes her blaze and socks really stand out. I put her in a straight bar bit and she is gonig much better, doesnt lift her head or try to evade the bit like she did in a snaffle. We are having so much fun with her, and although we are only happy hackers, if we do anything interesting with her i'll let you know! kind regards, carol.(ps ended up selling my horse so bought truf with some of the money.)
